What Is Vedic Math?

An ancient Indian mathematical tradition spanning 3,000+ years — that's faster, more elegant, and more pattern-based than the standard arithmetic taught in American schools today.

Vedic math is a system of mental-math shortcuts drawn from sacred Indian texts written between 800 BCE and 600 CE. These are the same texts that gave the world the concept of zero, negative numbers, the decimal system, and the geometric rule we now call the Pythagorean theorem — discovered in India 300 years before Pythagoras was born.

Faster than standard school algorithms

What kids can actually do after learning it:

  • Multiply two 2-digit numbers in their head in 2 seconds (vs 15 seconds with standard long multiplication)
  • Subtract from 1,000 or 10,000 instantly using a "what's missing from 9" pattern
  • Square any number ending in 5 with one mental step (35² = 1,225 in your head)
  • Find square roots in seconds without a calculator
  • See math as a pattern, not a procedure — which is exactly what Common Core asks for

American schools teach one slow algorithm per operation. Vedic math gives kids 16 pattern-based shortcuts they can pick from depending on the problem. The result is kids who do mental arithmetic faster than calculators — and actually understand why the math works.

ARITHMA teaches all 16 of these techniques through short videos and daily 5-minute practice — for kids in Grades K–12.

Try 3 Vedic Math Tricks Right Now

Read these once. Tomorrow your kid will be doing them at the dinner table.

Lesson 1 · Grade 3+

Multiply Anything by 11 — Instantly

Take the 2-digit number. Split the digits apart. Add them. Put the sum in the middle.

Example: 35 × 11
1 Split 35 into 3 _ 5
2 Add the digits: 3 + 5 = 8
3 Put 8 in the middle: 385
Try: 42 × 11 = ?  ·  71 × 11 = ?
Answers: 462 · 781
Lesson 2 · Grade 4+

Square Any Number Ending in 5

Take the digit before the 5. Multiply it by the next number up. Stick 25 on the end.

Example: 75²
1 First digit: 7
2 Multiply by next number: 7 × 8 = 56
3 Add "25" to the end: 5625
Try: 35² = ?  ·  85² = ?  ·  95² = ?
Answers: 1225 · 7225 · 9025
Lesson 3 · Grade 4+

Subtract Anything from 1000 — In Your Head

All digits except the last: subtract from 9. Last digit: subtract from 10.

Example: 1000 − 487
1 9 − 4 = 5
2 9 − 8 = 1
3 10 − 7 = 3  →  513
Try: 1000 − 364 = ?  ·  1000 − 219 = ?

The 3 Foundations of Vedic Math

Three Branches · One Complete System

Vedic math has three branches drawn from different ancient Indian sources. Together they cover every math domain in Common Core — at every grade level.

Foundation 1

ARITHMETIC MASTERY

From the 16 mental-math shortcuts compiled by Bharati Krishna Tirthaji (India, 1965), drawn from texts 3,000+ years old.

16 mental-math rules drive the mental-math curriculum. Every rule a child masters becomes a permanent new spell — a complement method for fast subtraction, a crosswise method for multiplication, a proportional method for fractions, and 13 more.

Common Core DomainsNumber & Operations · Algebraic Thinking · Expressions & Equations · The Number System
Foundation 2

SACRED GEOMETRY

From ancient Indian geometry texts (the "Rope Rules," 800–200 BCE) — the world's oldest geometry textbooks.

The world's oldest geometry rules power geometry lessons. These same texts state the Pythagorean theorem 300 years before Pythagoras was born. Kids rebuild corrupted worlds using authentic geometric proofs from this tradition.

Common Core DomainsGeometry (K.G through HSG) · Measurement & Data (area, perimeter, volume, angles)
Foundation 3

DATA & ASTRONOMY

From ancient Indian astronomy (Vedanga Jyotisha) and the logic of Brahmagupta (628 CE).

Vedic astronomy and logical inference drive the statistics lessons. Ancient Indian astronomers tracked planetary cycles, built predictive models, and developed probabilistic reasoning — exactly what Common Core Statistics demands.

Common Questions

FAQ

Is "Vedic math" actually rigorous? Or is it spiritual?
It's a documented mathematical tradition spanning 3,000+ years. The "Rope Rule" texts from 800 BCE India contain what's now called the Pythagorean theorem — 300 years before Pythagoras. The 16 mental-math shortcuts (compiled into modern form by Bharati Krishna Tirthaji in 1965) are genuine techniques that are demonstrably faster than standard school algorithms. The Indian mathematician Brahmagupta (628 CE) formalized rules for zero and negative numbers that took European mathematics 1,000 years to catch up to. Every technique in ARITHMA is sourced and citable. Zero spiritual content in the lessons.
What age is this best for?
Kids ages 6 to 17. We auto-adapt lessons to grade level: Kindergarten through Grade 12. Younger kids start with simple addition shortcuts; older kids learn the techniques that work for algebra and beyond.
How long until I see results?
Most kids show clear speed improvements within 2–3 weeks of 5-minute daily practice. The cross-wise multiplication trick alone usually clicks in a single lesson — kids start showing it off to friends within a week.
My kid struggles in math at school. Will this help?
Yes — and this is where Vedic math shines most. These shortcuts give a different way to think about arithmetic that often clicks for kids who struggled with the standard procedures. When a struggling student suddenly does 98−45 faster than their classmates, the confidence boost is real.
My kid is bored in math class. Will this challenge them?
Absolutely. Advanced students race ahead to grade-level-above techniques while still mastering their current standards. The mastery challenges give gifted kids genuine puzzles — not just more of the same.
How does this fit with my child's school math?
ARITHMA layers ON TOP of school math, not as a replacement. The techniques don't conflict with what they're taught in class — they're faster mental shortcuts kids use to check work and finish problems quickly. Every lesson is tagged to the matching Common Core standard.
What does daily practice look like?
A 3–7 minute video teaching one technique, followed by 10–15 practice problems that use it. Most kids finish in 5 minutes. We email parents a weekly report showing which techniques have been mastered.
Will there be ads or in-app purchases?
Never. ARITHMA is subscription-only with zero advertisements and zero in-app purchases. Educational software for children should not have those mechanics, full stop.
What data do you collect about my child?
Only learning performance data — accuracy, time-to-answer, lessons completed. We do NOT collect biometric data, conversation audio, location, or anything outside the lesson activity. COPPA and FERPA compliance are launch requirements.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes, anytime, no questions asked. If you cancel during your 7-day free trial, you're not charged. After that, monthly plans stop at the end of the current billing cycle.
For schools: what does adoption look like?
A per-student license includes a teacher dashboard with real-time class mastery, CSV exports for Infinite Campus / PowerSchool / Schoology, and standards-aligned reports for district approval. Pilot programs available — email cs@arithma.academy.
